PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Tram, bus, underground and ferryAmsterdam has tram, bus, underground and ferry services. In the city of Amsterdam you can travel easiest by tram. The busses and underground train system is better for journeys outside of the centre. There are just two underground railway stations in the centre of Amsterdam. Public transport runs until just after midnight. When you plan to use public transport on a regular basis you should buy a 'strippenkaart'.
What does a ticket cost? The strippenkaart comes in many forms. The most widely used are: Single tickets which you buy from the bus diver, tram conductor or at the automatic machines in the underground stations.
2 strips (€ 1.60) is valid for 60 minutes in 1 zone.
3 strips (€ 2.40) is valid for 60 minutes in 2 zones.
If you travel more often buy a strippenkaart beforehand.
15 strips (€ 6.90)
45 strips (€ 20,40)
There is a strippenkaart reduced rate for you if you are older than 64.
Where do you buy the 'strippenkaart' in advance? You can buy the 'strippenkaart' in the AKO bookshops and the kiosks. There is also the
public transport office (of the GVB). Here you can buy a strippenkaart and all sorts of information about public transport. You can also buy a 'strippenkaart' at some newspaper stands in the city.
How to use the 'strippenkaart'The use of a 'strippenkaart' needs a little study.
The city is divides in zones. For each zone you travel, you stamp one strip. In addition to the zone strip you stamp 1 strip as a start rate. In the city centre you travel within one zone. You have to stamp 2 strips (1 zone strip and 1 start rate strip) for each journey. In the hour after you stamped your ticket you can take as many trams and busses as you want, as long as you stay within your stamped zone. You can ask the driver to stamp your ‘strippenkaart’, or stamp it yourself in the machine (tram, underground).
If you stamp 2 strips, you skip one strip an stamp strip no. 2. For your next journey, again you skip a strip and stamp on strip no. 4. If you make a longer journey, in 2 zones for example, you have to stamp 3 strips (2 zone strips and one strip as a start rate). In our example you skip 2 strips and stamp strip no. 7.
